A Medieval Castle
Last week we visited Conisbrough Castle in South Yorkshire, England where we explored the grounds, ruins and interior of the 11th century castle, before climbing to the very top of its 92ft high keep. I was definitely living my Game Of Thrones fantasy. All I needed were three dragons and a blonde wig and it would have been perfect!
A Victorian House Frozen In Time
Brodsworth Hall, (also in South Yorkshire) is one of the most complete examples of a Victorian country house in England and is virtually unchanged since the 1860’s, so we really did feel like we were stepping back in time. Upon entering the house all of the original clocks begun chiming, telling us it was 2 o’clock. Giant chandeliers twinkled above us, as the Rembrandt style paintings watched our every move. We explored the whole house, including seemingly untouched drawing rooms, a library, billiards room, servant’s quarters and kitchen.
The gardens are just as grand; featuring a working Victorian Italian marble fountain, summerhouse, statue walks and a fern grotto.
The whole house feels frozen in time – almost like a scene from Great Expectations. English Heritage have really done an amazing job at preserving the house’s original features and keeping it’s character.
